Talking Music: More Notes on the President

More Notes on the President Are the harmonic distances – the melody – between each of the notes in a specific word, similar for different speakers?  I analyzed the basic pitch frequencies of  four different voices pronouncing the word President (all are extracted from NPR shows), and subsequently translated them into musical notes with my super duper algorithm, which for now can only be used with Mathematica. (Later on, when I finished the final concept of the program, I will probably write it in Python or C++. )

For now, I am partly happy with the result depicted above. What is really exciting, is that the rhythm, or better said the voiced and unvoiced parts are very similar, which I also expected.  However, the harmonic distances although they seem somewhat similar for each of the voices, are not very clear yet. I suppose this is also due to the fact, that in each of the sentences the word was followed by a different phrase. These are for example a part of each of the sentences from which the phrases were taken:

  1. President Hosni Mubarak,…
  2. So the President released its budget,…
  3. President Obama released…
  4. Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika…

The result of the t being followed by different consonants or vowels is that for example in a word like president Obama the o will be pronounced almost at together with the t, which makes the consonant less t-ish.

Let’s see how this idea evolves in the next days. Next up I will start comparing similar expressions in various languages, like the melodic structure of questions, greetings, expressions of joy etc. Research shows that they do indeed have a similar pitch curve, so this should also be visible in the conversion to music score! I suppose.
